The Dutch government, in collaboration with the maritime sector, has committed to investing €60 million in innovative shipbuilding during 2024 and 2025. This initiative aims to enhance domestic shipbuilding capabilities, focusing on sustainability, emission reduction, alternative fuels, and noise reduction.

Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates

In a joint effort, the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Belgian Navy are set to commence construction of new Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates in 2025. The hulls will be partially built at Damen’s shipyard in Galați, Romania, and subsequently fitted out at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in the Netherlands. The first frigate is scheduled for commissioning in September 2029.

Mine Countermeasures Vessels

The Royal Netherlands Navy is also progressing with the construction of the Vlissingen-class mine countermeasures vessels. The first ship, HNLMS Vlissingen (M840), was laid down in June 2022 and is expected to be commissioned in 2025.

These initiatives underscore the Netherlands’ commitment to advancing its shipbuilding industry through innovation and strategic partnerships.
