In recent years, the Netherlands has been actively reassessing its energy strategy, placing a strong focus on nuclear power. Initially, the government planned to build two new nuclear reactors at the existing Borssele Nuclear Power Plant by 2035, aiming to supply about 9–13% of the country’s electricity needs. (Source)

However, in March 2024, the Dutch Parliament approved a more ambitious plan to construct four new nuclear reactorsinstead of the previously planned two. These reactors are scheduled to be operational by 2035 and will provide at least 13% of the country’s total electricity consumption. (Source)

The Borssele Nuclear Power Plant remains the only operational nuclear facility in the Netherlands. It was commissioned in 1973 and operates with a PWR-type reactor. In 2006, modernization efforts increased its capacity from 449 MW to 485 MW. (Source)

The decision to expand nuclear energy is driven by the need for a stable and environmentally friendly energy source, particularly as the country phases out fossil fuels and aims to reduce CO₂ emissions. Additionally, the expansion of nuclear power will help decrease dependence on foreign energy imports and enhance national energy security.

The Netherlands is thus taking a significant step towards a sustainable energy future, integrating nuclear power alongside other renewable energy sources.
